Saskatchewan Bans Cell Phones in Classrooms Starting This Year
Starting in the 2024-25 school year, cell phones will be banned during class time in all K-12 schools across Saskatchewan, a move the province says aims to improve student engagement and focus.
“Technology has its place, but too often, cell phones are taking students’ attention away from what they should be learning,” Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said on Tuesday. “This new policy will allow students to be more engaged with their teachers and focused on learning the skills and knowledge they need to reach their potential.”
The ban applies to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, with exemptions for Grades 9 to 12 if needed for specific instructional purposes, after getting permission from administration.
“Limitations of cell phones will reduce distractions, allowing our staff to focus on educating our students,” said Prairie Spirit Board of Education Chair Bernie Howe in a statement.
But…but…if cellphones are banned from classrooms, how can students surf Instagram and watch TikTok videos?
Exemptions will be available for students requiring mobile devices for medical or specific learning needs. Each school division will handle communication procedures for emergencies. Saskatchewan joins several provinces implementing similar measures in fall 2024, including the likes of Alberta, BC, Ontario and Quebec.

Oh look! They did something that all schools have done for the last what.. 15 years?
Great work! Really moving the needle.
Waiting for Morontario and B(ad)C to follow suit. Won't happen in Kaybek because the language police has to send hourly remainders to students to not speak Engrish. 🤡
Cell phones have been prohibited in Québec public classrooms since last January.
