Telus has partnered with the City of Penticton in B.C., to let residents use its SmartEnergy program.

Penticton residents can get a free 12-month subscription (normally $12/month) to Telus SmartEnergy, which lets people manage home energy use and save money.

Telus says the plan is the first of its kind in Canada, and could help homeowners lower energy bills by up to 15% annually.

Penticton operates its own electric utility and the Telus partnership means Residents can sign up for the app-based service, which also includes a smart thermostat and two smart plugs for just $25 (over $350 savings in total).

“A recent survey of our residents found that 84.3 per cent are motivated to take steps to reduce their electrical bills. This pilot project with Telus is an opportunity to provide Penticton’s electrical customers with the tools to become more aware of their daily energy usage,” says Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield, in an issued statement to iPhone in Canada.

“Our SmartEnergy service also offers insights into Penticton’s peak energy times, allowing residents to participate in energy savings events to help lower demand when it’s needed most,” says Dwayne Benefield, Chief Product Officer at Telus.

Telus also says it will plant four trees annually for every SmartEnergy subscriber, with the program available now.

I absolutely want someone else to control my thermostat…yep, definitely, 100% a good idea. /s
I have a smart thermostat, I can program it myself based on MY needs.

This is as smart as the carbon tax.
