Tesla Gives Free FSD 13 Trials in Canada for Christmas

Tesla is getting into the Christmas spirit with free Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trials for eligible vehicles in Canada and the U.S., according to emails sent to qualifying customers on Christmas Eve (via Tesla North).

During the trial, owners of Tesla vehicles with AI4 (formerly known as Hardware 4) can experience advanced self-driving features like automatic lane changes, navigating forks in the road, maneuvering around other vehicles and objects, and making turns under their supervision with FSD 13, the newest iteration of the company’s autonomous driving software.

Tesla vehicles with the older AI3 hardware are yet to get FSD 13 and, therefore, aren’t eligible for the free trial. How do you know if your Tesla has Hardware 4?

  • Model S/X: early 2023 builds
  • Model Y: build from May 2023
  • Model 3: 2024 refresh

AI4 cars also do not have ultra sonic sensors in the bumpers as they rely solely on cameras. AI4 cars also have upgraded exterior cameras.

While FSD (Supervised) can handle some advanced driving tasks, Tesla warns that it is not fully autonomous and drivers must keep their eyes on the road at all times. The free trial will run through January 23, 2025. Meanwhile, existing FSD subscribers will receive an extra 30 days for free.

Your Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Trial starts now!

You’ve been granted a complimentary trial* of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) for your Model Y ending in XXXXXX.

Under your supervision, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can drive your Tesla almost anywhere. It will make lane changes, select forks to follow your navigation route, navigate around other vehicles and objects, and make left and right turns. You and anyone you authorize must use additional caution and remain attentive. It does not make your vehicle autonomous. Do not become complacent.

This trial will end on January 23, 2025.

*If you have an active FSD (Supervised) subscription, 30 days of free Full Self-Driving capability will be added to your vehicle.

Free FSD trials help Tesla encourage adoption and expand its pool of beta testers while giving drivers access to the company’s latest and greatest self-driving features. The electric vehicle giant launched the first free one-month FSD trials in Canada back in March.

While Tesla owners with AI3 hardware won’t be getting FSD 13 just yet, Tesla previously said they will receive FSD 12.6 sometime this month. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said there’s a chance that AI3 won’t be able to handle full, unsupervised FSD, and if that’s determined to be the case, the company will offer free hardware upgrades to customers who outright purchased FSD ($11,000 CAD at this time — or $16,000 CAD before price cuts earlier this year.
