Here’s What Happens Once TikTok Shuts Down in U.S.
TikTok, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, is preparing to cease operations in the United States if a federal ban set to take effect this Sunday moves forward.

This ban hinges on the inability of TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest its U.S. assets, a requirement stemming from national security concerns tied to its Chinese ownership.
The ban, introduced under a national security law signed by President Joe Biden last year, has sparked significant legal and political debates. Although some lawmakers and former President Donald Trump are pushing for an extension to the deadline, the U.S. Supreme Court appears likely to uphold the legislation.
If enforced, the ban would restrict new TikTok downloads on app stores like Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Existing users would lose access to updates, potentially rendering the app obsolete over time.
However, reports suggest that TikTok’s strategy extends beyond what is legally required. Sources indicate the app plans a complete shutdown in the U.S., including blocking access for current users, should the ban come into effect.
According to reports from Reuters, users attempting to open TikTok in the U.S. after a shutdown would receive a message redirecting them to a website explaining the ban. Additionally, users would have the option to download their data, ensuring they can retain personal information stored on the platform.
Critics argue that banning TikTok may violate Americans’ free speech and harm small businesses and creators who rely on the platform to reach audiences.

Despite the impending ban, TikTok appears committed to its U.S.-based workforce. An internal memo revealed the company’s plans to retain all 7,000 employees in the U.S. even if operations halt.
The company reassured employees of their job security, pay, and benefits while underscoring that the legislation does not impact employment contracts.

How is the ban deployed? Does it still work with a VPN?
tiktok will leave US completely. even if you have the app, because no service provider can host tiktok US, they won't be able to service the country. if you connect to VPN to another country, I guess it may work but I never tested it.
I was able to do a test, TikTok was working perfectly fine on my Telus sim card. Then I switched to my AT&T sim card and TikTok wasn't working anymore even if I'm physically in Canada.
