Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Cost Up to $2,500 US: Report

We now have more details about Apple’s first foldable iPhone yet again, with a report claiming mass production is expected to begin in late 2026.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (he used to be an Apple whisperer), the device will be positioned as a high-end, AI-powered smartphone, integrating advanced features designed to enhance multitasking and user experience.

The foldable iPhone is expected to retail for more than $2,000 US (about $2,862 CAD), potentially reaching $2,500 US (about $3,578 CAD). Despite the sky high price, Apple’s strong brand loyalty and the device’s premium positioning could drive significant demand, claims Kuo.

Kuo’s report suggests that Apple is focusing on AI as a key feature of the foldable iPhone. The larger screen is expected to improve AI-driven functions, such as interacting with a chatbot while simultaneously viewing maps or other apps.

Apple is reportedly designing the device with a book-style fold, featuring a 7.8-inch crease-free inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. Due to space constraints, Face ID may be omitted, with Touch ID returning as a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The phone will feature a dual-lens rear camera, with a front-facing camera available for use in both folded and unfolded states.

Hearing that Apple would go backwards to have Touch ID instead of Face ID? That doesn’t make sense.

The foldable iPhone is expected to be 9 to 9.5mm thick when folded and between 4.5 and 4.8mm when unfolded. The hinge will use a combination of stainless steel and titanium alloy, while the casing will be made entirely of titanium. Apple also plans to include a high-density battery similar to the ultra-thin battery cells rumoured for the iPhone 17 ‘Air’.

Development is still in the early stages, with Apple expected to finalize the device’s specifications in the second quarter of 2025. The official project launch is set for the third quarter of 2025, with mass production starting in the fourth quarter of 2026. A second-generation foldable iPhone is already being planned, with production likely beginning in the second half of 2027.

Shipments for the first foldable iPhone are expected to be limited, with estimates ranging between 3 to 5 million units in 2026, says Kuo. With the second-generation model included, total shipments could reach 20 million units by 2027.

Kuo has sources within Apple’s supply chain, but at this point, it’s crazy to think an iPhone could cost up to $2,500 US. Who is going to pay that for an iPhone in today’s economy?

This could be somewhat tempting if it could also be an effective replacement for an IPAD mini. One device that can be both an iPhone and an IPAD mini. But it would also have to have the latest camera tech too.
