Apple’s Plans for a Huge Foldable iPad Just Leaked
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his Sunday PowerOn newsletter, reports that Apple is reportedly working on a foldable device that could redefine how we use tablets and laptops.
The device, described as a giant iPad, would unfold to the size of two iPad Pros placed side by side. According to sources, Apple has been developing it for a few years and is aiming for a release around 2028.
A major focus for Apple is eliminating the crease seen on foldable screens, which has been a problem for competitors like Samsung. Gurman reports that Apple’s prototypes have made progress, with a nearly invisible crease, but it’s unclear if they can fully remove it. Unlike other foldables that use two screens connected by a hinge, Apple is designing a single, seamless piece of glass for its display. Now that would be very cool to see.
The foldable device is expected to be more expensive than current options and will likely support accessories like the Apple Pencil. By 2028, Apple’s iPadOS is expected to be advanced enough to run Mac-level applications, making the device more functional for users who want a hybrid of tablet and laptop capabilities. In its current form, iPadOS is still pretty basic as it doesn’t run full macOS.
Gurman also mentions that Apple is exploring a foldable iPhone. However, he doesn’t expect it to launch before 2026, making Apple the last major smartphone maker to enter the foldable market.
In addition, leaked documents suggest Apple could use an 18.8-inch foldable screen for a future device between 2028 and 2030. Gurman’s reporting aligns with these leaks, which also indicate Apple plans to switch the MacBook Pro to OLED screens in 2026, with the MacBook Air following in 2027.
Apple fans are still waiting for the next big thing to come from the company. We’ve seen small iterations of the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Customers want something new and exciting and Vision Pro might have achieved that, but it’s incredibly expensive ($4,995 in Canada) and many say it’s uncomfortable to wear for long periods unless you buy third-party head straps.
Are you looking for a giant foldable iPad? The only thing that will be huge will be the possible gaping hole in your wallet once we learn about the starting price in four to five years.
