Bell Slashes Throttled Speeds Even More After Data Runs Out [Update]

Update March 14, 2025: A Bell spokesperson told iPhone in Canada in an email the change to 256 Kbps was “posted in error” and the company is “in the process of correcting it.”

Our original story is below:

Bell’s making more than just job cuts, as its throttled speeds for unlimited data plans are now even slower after you’ve exhausted your data bucket.

Back in June 2019 (can you even remember that far back?) when Bell launched ‘unlimited’ data plans, as a response to Rogers, the company’s data speeds would throttle to 256 Kbps after you used up your data bucket.

It wasn’t until Telus debuted its own unlimited data plans, but with throttled speeds of 512 Kbps after data buckets were exhausted, did Bell match its rival at 512 Kbps.

Fast forward to March 2025, and now it seems we’re going back in time. According to info received by iPhone in Canada, Bell has cut its throttled speeds back to 256 Kbps. The change was made this week, likely timed when it revised the design of its website. As of writing, Rogers and Telus are still showing throttled speeds of 512 Kbps once you use up your data bucket.

“Unlimited data at reduced speeds thereafter. Speeds of up to 256 Kbps for very light web browsing, email and messaging,” reads the Bell website.

Now, this change will only affect those that can burn through at least 100GB of data per month. But still, the marketing of “unlimited data” is a big issue. The Competition Bureau is currently going after Rogers claiming its marketing is misleading.

We reached out to a Bell spokesperson about the change but there was no comment received at the time of publishing.

Remember the government approving the shawrogers sale, telling Canadians less competition is better? Anyone who has traveled outside of North America knows we are all being screwed. Folks what have you paid in other countries? SEA I pay $26cdn a month for unlimited high speed and it works great. Had 3 devices connected to one mobile hotspot all watching movies, internet, texting never one problem. Remember the government knows what's best for you and you don't need more competition in the mobile space. Unreal.
