Anthropic Launches Claude 4 Models, Including Opus 4 and Sonnet 4

AI startup Anthropic just launched its latest AI models, Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, and they’re a big step forward in how smart and useful AI can be—especially when it comes to coding and solving complex problems.
The big highlight is Claude Opus 4, which they say is now the best AI model for coding in the world. It can handle long, detailed tasks without losing focus, and it works so well that companies like GitHub and Replit are already using it to help build software. It even passed some tough coding benchmarks that other models couldn’t. Anthropic shared a GIF of Opus 4 creating a ‘Navigation Guide’ while playing Pokémon, essentially detailing notes to improve gameplay.
Then there’s Claude Sonnet 4, which is a more efficient, faster version that still performs well but is designed to be more practical for everyday use. Think of Opus as the high-end model for deep work, while Sonnet is your go-to for quick and solid results.

Both models can now use tools like web search while they’re thinking through a problem, and if you give them access to files (like in a developer environment), they can remember key details and use them to work more effectively over time. That’s kind of like giving the AI a working memory so it can build on what it’s learned.
Alongside these models, Anthropic also officially launched Claude Code, which works with code editors like VS Code and JetBrains. It lets developers get suggestions, edits, and even fixes directly in their files.
All of this is available now through Anthropic’s website and also through platforms like Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. Pricing for the new models stays the same as before, which is good news if you’re already using Claude.
U.S.-based Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers (the company behind ChatGPT). Claude is its main AI product, a language model built with a focus on safety and reliability (and named after Claude Shannon, the father of information theory). The company has backing from major investors which include the likes of Amazon and Google.
Apple could ramp up its AI plans if it had a large language learning model–maybe it should consider acquiring Anthropic?
