Freedom Mobile Launches Wireless Services in Chatham-Kent

Freedom Mobile has launched its wireless services in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, covering Chatham, Wallaceburg, Blenheim, Ridgetown, Dresden, Thamesville, and Bothwell.

The move gives local residents access to Freedom’s phone plans, including unlimited data options and roaming in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Customers in the region can also bundle mobile service with Freedom’s home internet and TV packages.

“We are delighted to bring Freedom’s worry-free wireless solutions to Chatham-Kent residents. They can now enjoy our competitive plans, including our innovative Roam Beyond offering, while accessing Freedom’s fast and reliable wireless network,” said Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, the parent company of Freedom Mobile, in a statement to iPhone in Canada. “This expansion further reinforces our steadfast dedication to promoting competition that serves all Canadians.”

The company said the rollout is possible through network-sharing agreements set out under the CRTC’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) framework. That framework allows carriers to expand service in areas where they don’t own their own infrastructure. Quebecor, which owns Freedom, has been pushing into smaller markets following its acquisition of the company from Shaw.

Freedom Mobile now serves more than 4 million customers across Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. The Chatham-Kent expansion is the latest in a series of smaller-market launches, as the carrier looks to challenge Rogers, Bell, and Telus in communities outside the country’s largest cities.

Local Freedom stores are already open in Chatham and Wallaceburg, with additional retail partners offering service in the surrounding towns.
