Ontario’s $300M Cell Gap Project Delivers 34 New Rogers 5G Towers

Rogers 5G service is now live in 34 additional communities across eastern Ontario, following the completion of 34 new cell towers since April. The expansion is part of the ongoing Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) Cell Gap Project, which aims to bring more reliable cellular coverage to rural and underserved areas.

The new coverage reaches parts of the City of Kawartha Lakes, County of Hastings, County of Peterborough, County of Renfrew, Lennox and Addington, Prince Edward County, Lanark County, Frontenac County, Northumberland County, Prescott and Russell, Quinte West, and several First Nations including Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, Curve Lake, and Hiawatha.

The Cell Gap Project is a $300-million public–private partnership that includes funding from federal and provincial governments, eastern Ontario municipalities, and Rogers, which was selected to build out the network. The plan includes roughly 332 new towers across the region. According to EORN, 222 of those towers are now active, and upgrades to more than 300 existing sites are complete.

EORN says the expanded network is meant to improve public safety, reduce coverage dead zones on rural roads, and support local businesses and residents who depend on reliable connectivity. The group notes that patchy cell service has been a long-standing problem for many communities in the region.

“We are proud to connect more residents and businesses in Eastern Ontario communities to Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network, working with our government partners and the Eastern Ontario Regional Network,” said Mark Kennedy, Chief Technology Officer, Rogers, in a statement.
