Apple’s Next iPhone Air Might Arrive in 2026 After All

Apple’s much-rumoured second-generation iPhone Air may not be as far off as previously thought. According to a new report from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone Air 2 could still arrive as early as fall 2026, despite a growing consensus among analysts and supply chain watchers that the device had been pushed back to 2027 (via MacRumors).

Sources claim Apple is still targeting a fall launch window for the next iPhone Air. The same tipster says the iPhone 17e is already in mass production and on track for a spring launch event, suggesting Apple’s lower-cost lineup plans are moving ahead on schedule.

This latest rumour runs counter to several corroborated reports that suggested Apple delayed the iPhone Air 2 to March 2027. Those reports tied the delay to disappointing sales of the first-generation iPhone Air, which supposedly prompted Apple to slash production to almost end-of-life levels just weeks after launch. Until now, the rumour mill was signalling that Apple plans to shake up its traditional iPhone release cycle with the iPhone 18 family, launching iPhone 18 Pro models and its long-awaited first foldable iPhone in fall 2026, while saving the standard iPhone 18, a new iPhone 18e, and the iPhone Air 2 for a spring 2027 event.

If the new claim proves accurate, Apple may be reconsidering that strategy. The iPhone Air 2 has been rumoured to directly address key complaints about the original model, including adding a second rear camera and lowering the device’s price. Other expected upgrades include a lighter overall design, vapour chamber cooling, and a larger battery, all aimed at making the ultra-thin iPhone more compelling to mainstream buyers.

We’ll have to wait to see where exactly the chips fall when it comes to the iPhone Air 2’s debut, especially after one of the lead industrial designers behind the original iPhone Air recently left Apple. If an iPhone Air successor comes out next fall, it could headline Apple’s September iPhone event as another novel form factor alongside the foldable. What’s more, several reports have likened Apple’s foldable to two iPhone Airs joined together. That could give Apple reason to align its ultra-thin and foldable designs more closely in the same product cycle.

Still, with so many prior reports pointing to a 2027 debut, a fall 2026 launch would come as a surprise. For now, the iPhone Air 2 remains firmly in rumour territory, but it’s increasingly clear Apple hasn’t given up on the petite design.
