Videotron and Fizz 5G Network Gets a Major Samsung Upgrade

Videotron is deepening its ties with Samsung to modernize the backbone of its mobile network. The companies announced a new agreement on Thursday that moves their partnership beyond radio antennas and into the core infrastructure that powers 5G and 4G LTE services.

The upgrade uses Samsung’s cloud-based technology to manage data traffic for Videotron and its digital prepaid brand, Fizz. By switching to this new system, the Quebec-based carrier aims to make its network more flexible and reliable as it expands across the country.

“Samsung’s success delivering our RAN infrastructure gave us confidence in their ability to support our Core network,” said Mohamed Drif, Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer, Videotron, in a statement to iPhone in Canada on Thursday. “Their solution leverages open, industry-standard platforms that provide the operational flexibility we need as we elevate service for our customers in Quebec and expand our digital-first mobile and home internet brand, Fizz, across Canada. The cloud-native approach aligns perfectly with our network evolution strategy.”

This shift is part of a broader trend where telcos are moving away from specialized, proprietary hardware. Instead, they are using software-driven solutions that run on standard servers from companies like Dell and AMD. For Samsung, the deal strengthens its footprint in the Canadian market following similar projects with other local carriers.

The rollout is designed to simplify how Videotron manages its network on a daily basis. For customers, this behind-the-scenes work typically translates to more consistent speeds and fewer connection drops during peak usage.

A Videotron spokesperson told iPhone in Canada the deal represents a major step forward, as the company is now “moving beyond RAN into 5G NSA and 4G LTE Core infrastructure.” Simply put, Videotron isn’t just buying Samsung’s cell tower antennas anymore. They are now using Samsung’s main computer systems to run the brains of their 4G and 5G networks.

Other telecoms that are also using Samsung’s tech for their 5G core technology include SaskTel and Telus.
