Google Gemini ‘Memory’ Feature Now Available for Free in Canada
Google is rolling out a significant update for Gemini users in Canada, making its ‘Personal context’ feature available to everyone rather than just paid subscribers. The update allows the AI assistant to reference past conversations to better understand user preferences and specific details.
The goal of the feature is to make interactions feel more like a continuous partnership. By remembering previous topics or interests, the AI can provide more tailored suggestions without the user needing to repeat themselves in every new chat, explained Michael Siliski, Senior Director, Product Management, Gemini app.
How Personalization Works in Practice
The system uses previous dialogue to inform new requests. For example, if a user has spent time discussing Japanese culture in past chats, Gemini might automatically suggest Japan-themed video ideas when asked for new content inspiration. Similarly, if a user has mentioned specific hobbies or fandoms, the AI can incorporate those details into future brainstorming sessions for events or projects.
Privacy and Data Management
This personalization setting is enabled by default to provide more relevant responses immediately. However, users retain full control over their data and can disable the feature at any time.
To manage these settings, users can navigate to the ‘Personal context’ section within the Gemini app settings. Individual conversations can still be managed or deleted through the standard Gemini Apps Activity dashboard. This is essentially a memory feature that lets Gemini remember what you’ve told it in the past. By offering it for free, it will keep users sticking to using Gemini over other AI chatbots.
Rolling Out Across Canada
The update is currently rolling out to all Gemini 3 models. While some users will see the changes immediately, Google expects full availability to expand across Canada over the next several weeks. This move serves as a foundation for broader Personal Intelligence features, which are only available to paid Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. Google told iPhone in Canada it aims to expand Personal Intelligence to more countries and to the free tier in the future.
