iPhone OS 3.0: Should You Jailbreak Or Not?
In two days, Apple will officially release iPhone OS 3.0 firmware to download. iPhone users will rejoice as their iPhones will instantly gain new features and functionality. New features such as copy and paste, MMS, and search were not available to us before. We had to jailbreak our iPhones to get access to 3rd party applications via Cydia/Installer.
Why Jailbreak your iPhone in the First Place?
Jailbreaking your iPhone would gain us access to the following:
– themes via Winterboard (hopefully Apple will allow themes one day)
– Skype calling over 3G networks (along with Slingplayer) This is a HUGE benefit of jailbreaking
– yellowsn0w: unlock your iPhone 3G on 2.2 firmware to use on any GSM network (another jailbreaking plus)
– copy and paste with Clippy (now addressed in 3.0)
– SBSettings to quickly toggle WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, SSH, etc. (not in 3.0)
– 5 icon dock (not in 3.0)
– qTweeter: the fastest way to use twitter (this app is awesome)
– QIK for live video streaming to the web (iPhone 3GS will have video and uploading to YouTube)
– download free apps/game and SSH onto your iPhone…Google is your friend 😉
Jailbreaking the iPhone is huge if you’re looking to unlock it and use it with any GSM network (like maybe Telus?!). We know that GSM competition in Canada could come as soon as this Fall/Winter. However, keeping up with the cat and mouse game of jailbreaking and using QuickPWN over and over again can get tiresome. The worst part is resisting pressing that tempting “update” button in iTunes–don’t do it!
I still have my unlocked 1st gen iPhone still, so if I’m going to travel it will be my phone of choice. But if I ever do free myself of my Rogers shackles that are tightly wrapped around my cankles, I would welcome switching to some GSM competition in this country. Until then, I will have to just enjoy what I have.
So, are you going to jailbreak when you’re on iPhone OS 3.0 firmware? Yes/No, and why?

TELUS Mobility has definite plans to release their HSPA network next year. You can call their client care and they will confirm for you. Though they are not sure about the iPhone being sold by their company, by using yellowsn0w this will not be a problem.
The previous news that TELUS is testing out their GSM coverage sounds true. If you try to look for another carrier around the Burnaby area I won’t be surprised. Last time I checked we ALL support that iPhone … not the carrier (ie. Rogers).
There are less reasons for jailbreaking now but i think i probably still will for qik (and i cant get 3gs yet due to contract :()
id be interested in how the jb copy paste packages go now its built in, maybe they could concentrate on a clipboard history to compliment the apple c & p. hclipboards history and templates were a godsend
I will continue to jailbreak so that I may use Skype over 3G. The other reasons you listed are important too – but my main reason is Skype over 3G!!
I agree with Skype over 3G. The sound quality is way too good to pass up. I’m waiting for 3.0 before jailbreaking again. Currently using a bone stock 3G (after getting a replacement for dust) and it’s painful to without SBSettings!
I will still jailbreak mine too when 3.0 jailbreak/unlock is available.
I won’t update until it has been jailbroken. What we have done without jailbroken iphones. It opens a new realm!
Cheers
Video has me thinking of jailbreaking it!!!!!
LOL! sooo tru, how did they miss that one for 3g users. plus SBSetting, use it all the time. pdanet(tether via wi-fi).
Jailbreaking the iPhone makes a good phone into a great phone for all the reasons you mentioned. Not to mention you can also record video on a jailbroken iPhone.
HECK YES! lol Jailbeaking the iPhone allows so much more, its a must! 😛
The FW 3.0 will change lots in the iPhone scene but have that jailbroken iPhone makes it that much better. Plus if u wanna unlock, ur going to have to jailbreak sometime….
@Gary
What BL/Modem FW is ur iPhone? You still are unable to unlock ur iPhone 3G? 🙁
I always used my iPhone on another carrier (first 2G on Fido, and now my 3G on various carriers since I travel). As such, yellowsnow is vital. I will be patiently waiting, as usual, for the pwned 3.0. Usually it only takes a couple of days, but well see this time, as there seems to be issues with having 3.0 comminucate with 2.28 or yellowsnow to work with anything after 2.28. Gotta say, I hope Telus is up and running the next time I’m back living in Canada (switching from Telus to Fido hurt!).
I will be jailbreaking, as well. Some many more things you can do with the device. I wonder quickly we’ll have the jailbreak? Same day as 3.0 is released? Probably within in the week.
What I want to know is whether the dev team will be able to get the video and voice control features working for 3G phones. Anybody heard anything about that?
I’ll jailbreak for sure. Yellowsnow is a godsend for travelling. Having US/UK numbers with data is the only way to go!
I have resisted jailbreaking till after 3.0 but apple has forced me into it by forcing slingplayer to disable 3g. I want to be able to program my pvr when I see an ad for a TV show at a bus stop.
@nick
I think the voice control stuff (the official one anyway) will only be in the 3gs version of the firmware as there seems to be a seperate one.
But there is no reason an alternative cannot be made, If the google app can do voice search I’m sure a jb voice app could.
I will upgrade to 3.0, and then Jailbreak when it becomes available. Skype on 3G is the main reason along with having to the ability to switch to Bell once their GSM network is up and running, hopefully in time for the Olympics.
you forgot about backgrounding apps… which can only be done with jailbreaking
backgrounding last.fm is awesome
and seriously? you’re still sshing to install your downloaded apps? really??
go to appulo.us to get apps now.
I’ll probably jailbreak for the ability to DL free apps and to simplify my springboard with winterboard. I’m getting used to having a stock iPhone though!
I will definitely upgrade to 3.0 when the 3.0 jailbreak/unlock is released. You cannot pass on doing this since it gives you the flexibility of enjoying your Iphone even more with apps like Intelliscreen and SBSettings. Quickpwn is your friend.
Duc
If I update firmware 3.0 and jailbrake afterwards, will I still have the functionality in 3.0 firmware?? I’m dying to get a video cam on my iphone 8 gb and i think the only way to do it is thru jailbrake. Please advise.
Yes, you will have all the functionality of the 3.0 firmware.
Im waiting until they have 3.0 unlocked before even updating.
Jailbreak? YES!!! Its the only way to go. I dont understand why people wont/dont want to jailbreak. its worth it just for winterboard alone.
I guess, I will be different this time. I’m not planning to jailbreak after 3.0, I don’t use Skype, I don’t do video either, the only thing that I’m using many times a day will be SBSettings, that I’m going to miss quite a lot ( especially the ability to toggle Wifi/Bluetooth with a finger swipe), but hey they mentioned 3.0 should have over a 100 new features, I hope one of them would be around toggling wifi/bluetooth.
how do i jailbrake and unlock the phone? my warranty is up in august so I have nothing to lose and as some of the users have said, once I do the 3.0 update tomorrow, I can keep the 3.0 firmware on my iPhone but I can no longer update using iTunes. correct??
I’ve jailbroken already and it’s not an unmixed blessing. The performance does suffer a bit and I reboot more often.
I plan to restore and upgrade to 3.0 and then jb, because skype over 3g is worth it I’m thinking with tethering enabled the hack for skype over 3 g will be lower impact and I’d rather have native cut and paste.
I too will be jailbreaking, and yellowsnowing! Great work guys!
I will jailbreak, incase we get screwed again with the tethering prices from Fido/Rogers atleast there’s plan B with pdanet.
