Hot Tip: Watch Netflix USA Titles With Your Netflix Canada Account via VPN

Update 1: Some users have experienced HotspotShield disconnecting. The VPN service Hide My Ass is only $6/month and has worked consistently for many iOS and Android users. Check it out here. Others popular VPN services to consider are ExpressVPN (30 days money back guarantee) or Unblock-Us.

Are you still subscribed to Netflix Canada? You jealous of Netflix USA’s hot titles, compared to our initial offerings after a year here in Canada? Well, you’re going to love the following hot tip–you can access the entire Netflix USA library with your Canadian account, just by using a free VPN, such as Hotspot Shield.

This service is free, but ad-supported (you can click the ‘x’ and ads will disappear) and works for both Mac/PC. You might recall Hotspot Shield also provided a free VPN for iPhone/iPad users. Their dedicated iPhone page is no longer up and running, but the VPN accounts still work.

Setting up Hotspot Shield VPN on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

1. On your iOS device, go to: Settings -> General -> Network -> VPN -> Add VPN Configuration:

Enter the following details:

Select the IPSec tab/pane
Description: HotspotShield
Server: 68.68.107.101
Account: n5tfrq
Password: n5tfrq
Use Certificate: OFF
Group Name: hss
Secret: hss

2. Go to Settings–VPN–toggle it ON. You should see a tiny VPN icon in the Status Bar.

3. Clear the Netflix app out of your multitasking tray (double tap Home, tap/hold then delete). Launch it again. Voila.

4. The VPN might turn off in a minute or two, so make sure you press ‘play’ on a show immediately.

How to Watch Netflix USA with Your Netflix Canada Account On your Mac/PC

1. Download Hotspot Shield here, and install it.

2. Ensure you’re connected to Hotspot Shield, then visit Netflix.com and sign in with your Canadian credentials. You’ll then immediately see a new list of titles, not available in Canada:

3. That’s it! Check out Shutter Island playing below:

Today, Netflix also announced a “Just for Kids” section for Canada and the USA. Titles are getting better, but they aren’t at the level of our friends down in the USA just yet. Don’t forget to follow this tip on how to subscribe to Netflix Canada’s new releases via RSS feeds.

Let me know how this setup works for you! Click here to sign up for Netflix–the first month is free!

Thanks for the credit.. It also works on the iPhone and iPad too… I use hotspot shield anthem as well.. Though you can’t access the hotspot shield page for iPhone anymore, but if you can find the VPN login details (email me if you want them) it’ll work!

I’ve been using a different service, unblock us for probably 8 months now and they haven’t done anything.

I don’t know HOW it works, but it does for the important things I’ve tried (Netflix, Hulu) it’s been flawless.

What I love best about it is that I don’t need separate software. I just change my dns settings directly from the device (Apple TV, Xbox, PS3, iPhone, iPad, etc).

I kept expecting it to NOT work, but that doesn’t happen.

I have this as well, started using it in December last year. Flawless…. Works exactly as described by Nick. I currently use a NetFlix US account, as described on Unblockus’s website. I wonder if I switch to a Canadian account if it will do as the article describes? Nick – you tried this?

I haven’t, but man I’m tempted to.. Having the best of both worlds would be simply stellar. Maybe I’ll sign up for a new account just to test it out.
Before I don’t think you could access/log in to a Canadian account when you were in the US and the US account when you were in Canada. So maybe they’ve adjusted things, and this was maybe just a few months ago.

I mean it’s so easy to just turn off the DNS servers and get access to local content again that switching back and forth would be really nice… Something to think about for sure.

But far better than the VPN offerings. This way you’re not having to worry about losing bandwidth and the times I’ve had to contact them for support (adding a feature, question about whatever) it went through like a charm and I was really impressed.

They help make a legit person out of me, and I think many of us as well. If only they could expand their selection. If their streaming included recent and possibly premium shows, I’d certainly pay much more.

Just tried this and it works!!!  However how safe is it?  Is this company legit?  How come it’s offering this for free, which is normally a paid service?
