The App Store Has Officially Surpassed 25 Billion Downloads

Late last evening, Apple updated their website to note the App Store has finally surpassed 25 billion app downloads. It was just over two weeks ago Apple announced a contest to offer a $10,000 iTunes gift card towards the App Store for one lucky winner.

The App Store launched in 2008, and on its first anniversary Apple announced it had passed 1.5 billion downloads, and two and half months later 2 billion was achieved. In January of 2010, the App Store hit 3 billion downloads. In January of 2011, the App Store hit 10 billion downloads. In July, the App Store hit 15 billion downloads. Last December, Apple announced the App Store hit 18 billion downloads. Here we are in early March, and 25 billion downloads have been accomplished. The growth has been phenomenal, and there’s no end in sight.

The winner of the contest has yet to be announced, stay tuned. How convenient this milestone was reached just prior to the iPad 3 event on Wednesday. You can bet we’ll hear more about this at the media event.
