Apple Reportedly Reducing Samsung’s Share of Chip Production For The Next iPhone

Apple’s A8 chip will likely debut in Apple’s next flagship phone. Like every past iPhone, the A8 will likely be manufactured by Samsung.

According to Korean daily Hankyung, the majority of the manufacturing will be handled by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). It is expected that TSMC will be responsible for 60 to 70 percent of the manufacturing of the A8 chip, with the remaining 30 to 40 percent going to Samsung.

A reported published last week revealed that Samsung manufactured the A7 chip that is currently being used in the iPhone 5S. It looks like Apple is slowly trying to lessen its dependency on Samsung and partner with other manufacturing companies.

The company signed a deal with TSMC in June and is set to begin production in 2014. Although, today’s report suggests that the transition at Apple’s supply chain is already underway.
