iPhone and the GoPro Will Change Film Techniques, Says Pixar

Apple may have a bigger-than-imagined influence on the film industry, suggests Pixar and Walt Disney chief John Lasseter. Speaking at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Lasseter said he can see a day when the filmmaker will produce a movie using nothing other than an iPhone — or a GoPro camera (via Variety).

“People will tell you, ‘That’s not going to work,’ but yeah, that’s going to work,” Lasseter said. “But the reason they say that is because it’s not what they are used to.”

We don’t have to go back too far in time to see some noteworthy improvements in the iPhone camera — actually, the rear camera has become better and better with every new version of the handset. And if the rumours are true, we may see Apple using a 12 MP camera sensor with the iPhone 6s.

The fact is, if we look back to the past few years, we can see how the iPhone was (partly) used to make award-winning documentaries (Searching for Sugar Man), ads (Bentley’s Intelligent Details ad), and a Sundance movie (Tangerine).

What GoPro and the iPhone bring is something fresh and new to the movie industry, as highlighted by Lasseter. “The Go-pro and the iPhone are here,” he said. “[They] give a vibrancy you have never been able to have before…I think a new film grammar is going to come with these things.”
