Fido 5G Signals Showing Up for Some Customers [Update]

Rogers-owned Fido looks to have enabled 5G for some customers it seems, as iPhone in Canada readers are telling us they are seeing 5G showing on their iPhones as of Sunday evening.

One Fido customer located in South Vancouver in B.C., told us their iPhone is showing a 5G signal in the status bar. You can see screenshots below sent to iPhone in Canada that clearly show “Fido” and “5G”.

Taking a quick 5G speedtest on Fido, which operates on the Rogers network, wasn’t particularly exciting as speeds were at 16-18 Mbps download based on this customer’s location. iPhone cellular settings we saw show Voice & Data as “5G Auto” under Fido.

What does this mean? It could mean Fido is going to be offering 5G download speeds soon, or the company is transitioning customers to its fastest network but throttling speeds down to 4G LTE, which is what Telus-owned Public Mobile does.

Currently, Public Mobile offers 5G and so does Freedom Mobile. Telus-owned Koodo ditched 5G for new customers earlier this year, while Virgin Plus has 5G plans. Fido never did jump on the 5G bandwagon but from what this looks like, it might be coming soon, officially.

We’ve reached out to Rogers for comment and will update this story accordingly. Let us know if you’re seeing a 5G signal from Fido and also note your location in the comments below.

Update June 10, 2024, 7:39am PDT: A Rogers spokesperson responded in a statement, saying “there are no plans to migrate Fido to our 5G network,” reiterating that Fido operates on their LTE network. “From time to time, we conduct tests on wireless sites, which may have resulted in a very small number of Fido customers temporarily on our 5G network,” said the spokesperson in an email to iPhone in Canada.

Thanks gladys
