Rogers, Telus, Bell Named Global Leaders in 5G—But Not in Speed

5g coverage experience

Opensignal has released its 2025 Global Mobile Network Experience Awards, and Canada’s major wireless players are standing out on the world stage.

Telus and Bell were named Global Leaders for 5G coverage, ranking just behind global winner T-Mobile. All three of our major telecoms—Rogers, Telus, and Bell—also earned Global Leader status for 5G reliability, putting them ahead of U.S. rivals AT&T and Verizon.

The awards highlight how Canadian networks are keeping pace internationally, though speeds elsewhere are still faster. In Brazil, Vivo topped large-market 5G download speeds with an average of 362.1 Mbps, while South Korea’s KT hit 470.7 Mbps in smaller markets.

You can see from the awards below, our ‘Big 3’ telecoms won four awards each across a variety of 5G categories, but lacked behind in 5G download speeds.

Globally, 5G adoption continues to climb. By mid-2025, there were 2.5 billion connections worldwide, equal to 28% of all mobile connections. That number is expected to more than double to 5.7 billion by 2030, said OpenSignal to iPhone in Canada in a statement.

In Canada, adoption has been growing steadily since 5G launched in 2020, with operators now moving toward standalone 5G networks that promise lower latency and more reliable service.

Reliability has become one of the top factors consumers consider when choosing a mobile provider, second only to price, according to Opensignal.

The federal government continues to drag its feet on millimetre-wave (mmWave) spectrum auctions (considered “true” 5G), which allow for super fast 5G speeds (3-5 Gbps or higher) and lower latency in dense setups, compared to our existing mid-band 5G.
