Apple has officially unveiled AirTag 2, a long-overdue refresh to its popular item tracker that focuses on what matters most: making lost things easier to find from farther away. Announced today in an Apple press release, the new AirTag keeps the same familiar design and price, while delivering meaningful upgrades under the hood.
The biggest improvement comes from Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same one used in the iPhone 17 lineup and the latest Apple Watches. This enables Precision Finding from up to 50% farther than the original AirTag, a welcome boost for anyone who’s ever wandered a parking garage or airport terminal trying to track down missing luggage. Bluetooth range has also been expanded, further improving findability when items are nearby but not quite within Precision Finding range.
Apple has also addressed one of the most common complaints about the original AirTag: volume. Thanks to an updated internal design, the new AirTag’s speaker is 50% louder, making it much easier to hear when it’s buried under couch cushions or tucked deep inside a bag. There’s also a new, more distinctive chime to help it stand out from background noise.

Another notable upgrade is support for Precision Finding on Apple Watch Series 9 and later, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer. That means you can now track down an AirTag directly from your wrist, without pulling out your iPhone.
AirTag 2 also builds on Apple’s Find My network and integrates seamlessly with Share Item Location, an iOS feature that allows users to temporarily share an item’s location with trusted third parties like airlines. Apple says more than 50 airlines — including Air Canada — now support this feature, which has reportedly reduced baggage delays and dramatically cut down on unrecoverable luggage.
This launch makes good on earlier reports that second-generation AirTags would feature increased range and improved findability thanks to a new UWB chip, something we’ve been tracking since late last year. It’s also worth noting that this is a modest but much-needed update to a product that first launched back in spring 2021.
Pricing remains unchanged at $39 for a single AirTag and $129 for a four-pack, which is good news. While Apple will likely discontinue the original AirTags, savvy shoppers may soon find them discounted at third-party retailers as AirTag 2 rolls out.
AirTag 2 is available to order today on apple.com and in the Apple Store app, with in-store availability coming later this week.

not a giant upgrade that makes me want to replace all my tags but its nice that its the same price. there should be a way to mute the speaker but i see how its a security risk haha
It’s relatively easy to disconnect the internal speaker on the current AirTags.
Too bad they're not reversing course on the worst decision they made with the originals: giving thieves the ability to disable them remotely. Apparently the fact that some people COULD use them for malicious purposes is less important than the fact that lots of people DID buy them so they could track their own property. The one hidden on my bike in case it got stolen became practically useless overnight.
Great thanks Apple, sam e boring design but at least the price is the same.
