Mac Pro
Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro and removed the workstation from its website. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company has been planning this move for quite some time. It’s also gone from Apple.ca so you won’t be able to buy the Mac Pro anymore.
The decision marks the end of a 20 year legacy for Apple’s most powerful desktop line. The Mac Pro first arrived in 2006, serving as the high end replacement for the Power Mac G5 during the transition to Intel processors. For years, it was the gold standard for creative professionals who required internal expansion, multiple hard drives, and high performance graphics cards.
The product line famously went through several dramatic transformations. After years of the classic tower design, Apple released a redesigned cylindrical model in 2013 that was often compared to a trash can (“can’t innovate anymore, my ass!” said Phil Schiller’s famous line at WWDC 2013). While visually unique, that version struggled with thermal issues, eventually leading Apple to return to a modular tower design in 2019.
The final version of the machine was released in 2023, featuring Apple’s custom M2 Ultra silicon. However, the efficiency of Apple’s own chips made the massive tower enclosure less necessary for many users. Gurman notes that Apple had been preparing to phase out the model to focus on its more compact professional offerings like the Mac Studio.
“Apple has discontinued the Mac Pro and has removed it from its website,” Gurman stated. “They had been planning to do so for a while now.” Talk about the end of an era, folks.
