Two New Apple Pencils Are Reportedly in Development for 2027

Apple is reportedly developing two new Apple Pencil units with an intended release sometime in 2027. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, these new Apple Pencils will complement the next-generation iPad Pro models.
Gurman claims in the latest Power On newsletter that Apple is developing a new lower-end Apple Pencil with a USB-C port. Additionally, a new, higher-end Apple Pencil Pro is reportedly in development at Apple.
Unfortunately, Gurman’s report doesn’t identify any radical changes or additions to the Apple Pencil units. So, it’s unclear what Apple may be adding or improving to the Apple Pencil (USB-C) or the Apple Pencil Pro. No firm release window has been stated either.
It’s believed that the new iterations of Apple Pencil are being developed in order to comply with EU requirements. Policies require companies to make batteries more easily replaceable in tech devices. Gurman makes note that the new Apple Pencils could offer “new battery systems.” What that means for the user is undetermined. However, it may suggest that the new units could support a replaceable battery system.
The Apple Pencil with USB-C was first launched in 2023. On top of introducing USB-C support, the device is designed for note-taking, sketching, and annotating on iPad. The stylus also offers Apple Pencil hover when used with M2 iPad Pro models and above.
Apple Pencil Pro was later released in 2024. As the name suggests, this stylus introduces pro-level features, such as a sensitive sensor in the barrel that detects a user’s grip. This brings up a tool palette for easier access to tools, line weights, and even colours. Apple Pencil Pro also supports the Find My network in the event you misplace it.
