Apple’s 2021 ‘Spring Loaded’ April Event: What to Expect

Apple is holding a virtual special event on Tuesday, slated to be the tech giant’s first major product announcement event of the year.

After much confusion surrounding the date of Apple’s spring event for 2021, ‘Spring Loaded’ was confirmed for April 20 — first by Siri, and shortly after by Apple itself.

Unlike Apple’s September events which regularly unveil the newest iPhone every year, what Apple has in store for its spring events is anyone’s guess. Here’s a list of new products the Cupertino, California-based iPhone maker may announce at Tuesday’s event:

iPad Pro

The rumour mill has been churning out reports of a new iPad Pro refresh for 2021, employing the same design language as the 2020 model but equipped with Apple’s first MiniLED display (apparently in short supply?) for the 12.9-inch model, better Apple silicon, upgraded cameras, and a Thunderbolt port. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says new iPad Pro models are coming so that will likely become true.

Apple Pencil

Just take a look at the Apple logo for the event — doesn’t it look like it’s been drawn using an Apple Pencil? Images and renders of a new, glossy version of Apple’s stylus have been making the rounds online, and the new iteration could even feature a spring-loaded tip.

AirTags

After being the subject of speculation since 2019, it appears that Apple could finally launch their take on the Tile. Apple’s AirTags (or Apple Tags?) are reported to use the Find My app and networks of Apple devices to track objects. Apple recently announced its Find My network has expanded to third party accessory makers.

iPad mini

The iPad mini hasn’t seen a successor since 2019, and there have been rumours of a new, larger 8.5-inch iPad Mini launching in 2021 since late last year.

AirPods 3

Apple could also unveil the third-generation of its wireless earphones, expected to feature shorter stems and replaceable tips along with a design language similar to that of the current AirPods Pro.

iOS 14.5

Given the current state of developer and public betas for the next iteration of iOS, iOS 14.5 should see an official release (and possibly an announcement) at or immediately after the ‘Spring Loaded’ event.

Honorable (But Unlikely) Mentions

Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, expect Apple products to be unveiled that will help people continue to work and learn from home. People can’t stop buying the company’s iPads.

What do you think Apple will announce at its April event tomorrow?
