Evasi0n in Numbers: 4 Days, 7 Million iDevices Hacked

Since the launch of Evasi0n, the highly anticipated iOS 6 untethered jailbreak tool, the software has seen the fastest adoption of all time, Jay Freeman told Forbes.

The administrator of Cydia says nearly 7 million iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches have been hacked using Evasi0n. Breaking it down to devices: as of Thursday night, the Cydia store has recorded visits from 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads, and 400,000 iPod Touches all cracked using the Evad3rs’ eagerly awaited jailbreak tool.

Although he couldn’t provide figures from previous jailbreaks, Saurik says – and we could also experience while trying to access Cydia, especially in the first two days – that Evasi0n has brought Cydia “insanely more new traffic” than Absinthe, which worked with iOS 5.

Why the popularity of jailbreak? Freeman’s argument is simple and a percentage of iDevice users seem to agree with his, as his latest stats show: people want to customize their device’s appearance and settings in ways Apple doesn’t allow.

“Smart phones have become more and more popular, but they’ve maintained a closed experience that makes it difficult for people to get what they want,” he says. “Therefore people have needed to turn to jailbreaking to fill the gap.”

Another explanation for the above sky-high jailbreak numbers in four days is anticipation: the public release of Evasi0n took much longer than any of the previous jailbreak tools at 136 days. As we previously reported, the Evad3rs have exploited five distinct new bugs to crack Apple’s defense system, creating the most amazing jailbreak yet – and they are also awaiting the next generation iPhone, to crack it.
