Meta’s Threads Now Has Over 175 Million Monthly Users

Meta’s Threads now boasts more than 175 million monthly active users, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a post on the platform on Wednesday (via The Verge).

Zuckerberg’s announcement comes on the brink of Threads’ one-year anniversary. The X (formerly Twitter) competitor first hit the App Store on July 5, 2023. However, the social network didn’t make its way to the European Union until December 2023.

By October 2023, Threads had amassed nearly 100 million monthly active users according to Zuckerberg. Growing its monthly user base to over 175 million since then is no small feat, especially for an app that’s barely a year old. X, meanwhile, hasn’t shared comparable user metrics since Elon Musk took over in late 2022.

Zuckerberg has previously said that he believes Threads could be Meta’s next billion-user app. While Threads continues to grow at a steady rate, it remains a loss leader for Meta as the platform is yet to be monetized. The Verge‘s Alex Heath reported hearing from Meta insiders that the company is considering plans to enable ads on Threads as early as 2025.

Per sources from within Meta, much of Threads’ growth is still being driven through promotion inside Instagram, which the former shares an account system with. Threads could also easily be integrated into Instagram’s existing ads system.

Meta continues to improve Threads and introduce new features as it tries to wrangle market share away from X across the globe. Back in April, Threads debuted a new archive feature that allows users to hide older posts. Meta later also started testing a new web experience for the platform.
