Apple has launched a new 14-inch MacBook Pro with its M6 chip, adding more CPU and GPU cores, faster on-device AI and up to 24 hours of battery life.
In Canada, the M6 MacBook Pro starts at $2,799 CAD. That’s the same price the base M5 MacBook Pro sells for new.
Pre-orders open tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28, and the laptop starts arriving to customers and in stores on Friday, November 6.
M6 gets a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, two more cores of each than M5. Every GPU core now has a Neural Accelerator, and the chip uses a Dual 16-core Neural Engine that Apple says is up to 1.9 times faster than the one in M5.
Apple claims up to 30 per cent faster graphics and up to 25 per cent faster AI workloads compared to M5. If you’re still on an M1 MacBook Pro, Apple says you’ll see up to 11 times faster graphics and up to 13 times faster AI performance.
The base model comes with 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage. You can configure it up to 32GB of memory, and the 24GB and 32GB options bump memory bandwidth to 170GB/s.
Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, which Apple calls the longest ever in a Mac. That’s up to four more hours than an M1 MacBook Pro.
“With the powerful M6 chip, we’re taking performance to the next level, with a boost in CPU speed and graphics and even more powerful capabilities for on-device AI,” said Shelly Goldberg, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering.
The rest of the laptop will look familiar. There’s the 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness and an optional nano-texture finish, a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, six speakers and three mics.
Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 are new, and the laptop supports up to two external displays. Ports include three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack.
It ships with macOS 27 and Siri AI, which now speaks French as well as English. Colour options are space black and silver.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $2,799 CAD in Canada before tax, or $2,659 CAD with education pricing. That gets you the 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage in either colour.
Holding the line at $2,799 CAD matters after Apple’s wave of Canadian price increases in June. The MacBook Pro joins the new M6 iMac, which also launched today.
Apple’s week isn’t over. Its Pro and Tell event is set for October 28, the same day pre-orders open for the M6 MacBook Pro and the OLED iPad mini.
Are you upgrading to the M6 MacBook Pro, or waiting to see what Apple has planned for tomorrow?
